Confession of Murder - Deadly Confession (original title: Naega Sarinbeomida ., Dt, "I am the murderer") is an action thriller from the South Korean film director Jung Byung-gil from the year 2012. The film is about a serial killer who 17 years later, after the Murders are statute-barred, admits this and published in a biography.

action

Commissioner Choi Hyung-gu was on the trail of a serial killer who killed ten women between 1986 and 1990 and who was suspected of abducting another woman. He never caught him, but Choi was able to shoot him in the shoulder one day.

In 2005, the killings are statute-barred and Choi continues to do so. The killer once threatened to slash his mother too. Suddenly Choi receives the call from Jung Hyun-sik, the son of one of the victims. He wants to kill himself. Choi storms to him, but he can't stop him from jumping from the house and is hit by a bus.

Two years later, a man named Lee Doo-seok suddenly appeared on the news. He gives a press conference on his biography I am the murderer , in which he admits to being the murderer of the ten women. After 17 years nothing more can be done to him because the murders are statute barred. He continued to be sorry. He also shows the gunshot wound that Commissioner Choi inflicted on him. The book becomes a bestseller. Lee is quickly gaining popularity due to his charming looks and remorse. He also asks a doctor, a relative of one of the victims, on his knees for forgiveness, but receives a slap in the face.

Choi believes Lee is a cheat and not the real killer. When Lee goes straight to Choi, he throws his lunch at him. Meanwhile, some relatives of the victims gather. They plan to kill Lee, but first learn from him what happened to Jung Tae-sook, the daughter of Han Ji-soo and fiancé of Choi Hyung-gu. But Lee is always guarded. Only at the pool are the guards negligent. You manage to put poisonous snakes in the pool. One bites Lee so he should go to the hospital. There is already an ambulance in front of the door, with the victims' relatives pretending to be paramedics. But suddenly another ambulance arrives and the kidnapping is exposed. However, they can escape with Lee first. But Lee's guards are in pursuit and Choi is called as it is his territory.

In a car chase on the highway, the kidnappers can shake off both Choi and the guards. But Lee has a clue where they might be. One evening he turns off the light and is able to free Lee. He delivers it to a hotel. The next day, Han Ji-soo visits Choi. Even if she couldn't see anything, she suspects him to have brought Lee back and blames him. After all, he was the kidnapper of her daughter and his fiancée. But Choi still believes Lee is just a fraud.

A broadcaster wants to make a profit from the thing. Choi and Lee are invited to a talk show. Choi wants to convict Lee as a fraudster. But suddenly a caller answers who only calls himself J. He tells Lee numerous details about Choi. When asked how he knew this, he says that this is the reason why he was never caught. Lee should stop. He hangs up. Immediately there is speculation that Lee is indeed a cheat and J is the real killer.

Choi also receives a call from his mother's house. J left a videotape there. He left his mother alive, but showed that he can get close to her. On the video, he sees his fiancée Jung Tae-seok saying that she wants to live. Lee examines the tape closely. Meanwhile, the TV station wants to talk to J. J posts a video showing where he buried Jung Tae-sok.

There should be a talk show with Choi, Lee and J, with a camera team live on site, where the body of Jung Tae-seok is supposed to be. After the bones are found, Choi and Lee tell that they have planned everything to find the real culprit. Lee is actually Jung Hyun-sik and, according to the files, is considered dead. The doctor and relatives of one of the victims were just able to save him and subject him to plastic surgery. The three of them planned a publicity stunt around the murder case to convict the real perpetrator. Choi wrote the book with all the details. As a stranger, Lee took on the role of the murderer. Choi knew that the real culprit would reveal himself if someone else claimed his murders for themselves. What was missing were the details of Jung Tae-sok. Only the real culprit could know them. So J was confirmed as that.

On the tape recording, Lee also found out that Jung Tae-seok was not killed until 1992. In the background you could hear TV news about the presidential election. Accordingly, the murder is not yet statute-barred.

J can escape. But after a chase, Choi catches him. The police can catch up and stop Choi from shooting him. They arrest J. Han Ji-soo wants to kill him with a pen filled with snake venom. But Choi can stop them, but then J sticks the pen himself in the chest.

The film ends with Choi being released from prison after five years. The media reports that the case sparked discussions about the statute of limitations on murder.

reception

Confession of Murder first opened in South Korean cinemas on November 8, 2012 and reached over 2.7 million admissions. Screendaily’s Jason Bechervaise is reminiscent of other South Korean serial killers films like Memories of Murder and The Chaser . The film opening was spectacular, but could not keep up the pace afterwards. The music and the camera work are strong.
