Conna Castle

Conna Castle ( Irish Gaelic : Caisleán Chonaithe ) is a five storey tower house on a limestone cliff in the village of Conna ( Conaithe ) on the banks of the River Bride near the town of Fermoy in Ireland's County Cork .

history

In 1554 the FitzGeralds , Earls of Desmond , began building Conna Castle on a high limestone cliff above the river. The construction was completed 10 years later. The castle and its property were taken by the English and passed into the hands of Sir Walter Raleigh , the English settler. The castle's rightful heir, James FitzThomas (the Sugán Earl ) started a rebellion to get the castle back. The rebellion failed and FitzThomas was imprisoned in the Tower of London . The castle then passed through a series of hands and eventually came into the possession of the Earl of Cork . Oliver Cromwell reportedly pulled past the castle and fired cannons at it before moving on. In 1653 a fire broke out in the castle, in which three of the steward's daughters were killed. Furthermore, the castle often changed hands. In 1851 she bought Hilary L'Estrange . He bequeathed it to his son, Reverend AGK L'Estrange , on whose death in 1915 Conna Castle was bequeathed to the state as the first property of its kind.
