Two football competitions are to be held at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo . Twelve teams are to take part in the tournament for women and 16 teams for men. In addition to the games in the Olympic city of Tokyo, games in Kashima , Saitama , Sapporo , Sendai and Yokohama are also to be played.

For men, only U-23 teams were originally allowed, which can be reinforced with a maximum of three older athletes. After the postponement of one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic , FIFA decided on April 3, 2020 that players born after December 31, 1996 can participate so that players who have contributed to the qualification can participate. There are no age restrictions for women.

qualification

A total of 16 teams will take part in the men's soccer tournament. At its meeting on September 14, 2017, the FIFA Organizing Committee decided on the allocation of qualification places.

Only U-24 players born after December 31, 1996 are eligible. Each team may be reinforced by a maximum of three older athletes.
