Conny Stuart (born September 15, 1913 in Wijhe , Overijssel province , † August 22, 2010 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch singer , actress , cabaret artist and musical artist .

Life

Conny Stuart was born under the real name Cornelia van Meijgaard. She grew up in The Hague near the Peace Palace . She attended the higher girls' school ( Hogere burgerschool ) Bleyenburg in The Hague and took piano lessons . During this time she used the family name Stuart for herself and received her nickname Puck at the same time .

Her career as a singer began in the band of jazz pianist , singer and band leader Freddy Johnson . Her first radio appearance took place on July 25, 1939. In October 1940 she received an invitation to perform together with other prominent Dutch show artists at a concert on the Leidseplein in Amsterdam. There she met the Dutch cabaret artist and singer Wim Sonneveld , who later hired her for his cabaret ensemble. She first appeared in his cabaret program Alleen voor Dames in 1943 . In the period that followed, Stuart appeared on numerous other programs alongside Sonneveld. Sonneveld discovered Stuart's comic acting talent and her ability to perform comic songs. Many song and cabaret texts were written by the later well-known playwright Hella Haasse , who, however, later reluctantly remembered her artistic beginnings in Sonneveld's cabaret. In 1946 Stuart played at the Kurhaus Cabaret of the actor, comedian and cabaret artist Cor Ruys in Scheveningen , where she appeared together with Fien de la Mar , Jan Teulings , Mary Dresselhuys and Albert Mol . In the 1950s, Stuart became a star in Sonneveld's cabaret programs , also due to the lyrics by the Dutch author and songwriter Annie MG Schmidt , who wrote at least one song for Stuart in every program. In the early 1960s joined Stuart two years at Tingel-Tangel Cabaret of Sieto Hoving on.

In the early 1960s, Stuart also made her stage debut as a stage actress . With the theater company Ensemble Stuart played in the comedy De duivele hale ze (1962), in the farce Trijntje Cornelis Daughter (1963) by Constantijn Huygens and in the play Ingeborg (1961), where she played the role of Aunt Ottilie from Fien de la Mar , an old maid, took over and got her first non-comic theater role. In 1961 she also took on an episode role alongside Joop Doderer in the Dutch television series Swiebertje .

In the 1960s, Stuart appeared mainly in the musicals by Annie MG Schmidt and Harry Bannink . The first big success was the musical Heerlijk duurt het langst in 1965 with the songs Zeur niet , Kleine zwakke vrouw and Het is over composed for Stuart . Met man en muis , a kind of cabaret revue, followed in 1969 with the song De bij en Knapenkoor . Stuart later appeared in the Schmidt-Bannink musicals En nu naar bed (1971), Wat een planeet (1973), Madam (1981) and De dader heeft het gedaan (1983).

She has also appeared in various musicals by other composers , in musical revues and song programs, including in Je moet ermee leren leven (1975) and Alle laatjes open (1979). In 1966 she had great success with the song Wat voor weer zou het zijn in The Hague , which was also released as a single .

She officially ended her career in 1986 with her stage show De Stuart Story (premiere: 1985). In 1987 she had one last public artistic performance with her solo program Rockebay .

Stuart received several awards for her artistic achievements, including the Golden Harp ( Gouden Harp ) of the Conamus Foundation (1969) and the Silver Medal of the City of Amsterdam on the occasion of her official farewell as a musical star in 1984. Stuart was married twice. Her first marriage to the impresario Henri Hofman has two sons born in 1945 and 1948. The marriage failed and was divorced in 1957. In 1957, Stuart married for the second time, eight years his junior Dutch actor Joop Doderer . This marriage also failed in 1960.
