geography

history

Conrad came into being when the Great Northern Railway laid tracks in 1901 , on which the town was built. It was named after WG and CE Conrad, the owners of a large ranch and organizers of the Pondera Canal Company, a forerunner of today's irrigation system in the Conrad area.

The town grew rapidly thanks to agriculture until Conrad had 1,500 residents in 1916. After that, expansion slowed due to drought. It was not until 1926 that the dry season was over, and the discovery of oil a year later enabled Conrad to develop further.

In addition to agriculture and oil production, flax spinning mills and a brickworks have shaped the industry in Conrad in the past .
