Life

Early years and beginning of career

Conrad Murray grew up with his maternal grandparents in Saint Andrew on the island of Grenada for the first seven years of his life. He then moved to live with his mother in Trinidad and Tobago , where he attended school. After high school, he volunteered as an elementary school teacher. He later earned his living as an insurance application auditor and as a customs officer to finance his university education.

In 1980 he moved to Houston, USA. There he attended Texas Southern University , after which he studied medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. At the age of 36, in 1989, he completed his medical degree and was eligible to practice medicine in the states of Texas, California and Nevada.

Further stations in his education and training were the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, the Loma Linda University Medical Center in California and the University of Arizona . After graduation, he returned to California and worked at the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

In 1999, Murray went self-employed in Las Vegas and opened his private practice. In 2006 he moved to the Acres Homes Heart and Vascular Institute in Houston.

Conrad Murray has been sued over a dozen times, including for breach of contract and failure to pay child support, but did not commit a criminal offense prior to his involvement in Michael Jackson's death as a doctor. He lives with his wife, also a doctor, a son and a daughter in Las Vegas.

Personal physician to Michael Jackson

Murray met Michael Jackson in Las Vegas in 2006 while treating one of his children for an illness. They made friends. For his upcoming concert tour in 2009, Jackson hired Murray as his personal physician for a salary of $ 150,000 a month.

Charges and convictions following the death of Michael Jackson

Murray has been widely reported in the US media since the singer's death. The Los Angeles Attorney's Office was investigating him for administering the anesthetic propofol to Michael Jackson , as he himself stated in an affidavit to the police. Acute propofol poisoning is believed to be the singer's cause of death, according to the autopsy report. Sedatives also played a role, especially the drug lorazepam .

On February 8, 2010, the Los Angeles District Attorney charged Murray with negligent homicide. Murray pleaded not guilty in court and was released on $ 75,000 bail and surrender of his passport. At first he was allowed to continue practicing his profession as a doctor, but he was neither allowed to own nor prescribe certain drugs. In January 2011, an immediate California ban was imposed and the indictment of negligent homicide was approved. The selection of the jury was set for September 8, 2011, the opening speeches on September 27, 2011. On November 7, 2011 Murray was found guilty of negligent manslaughter by the jury in the first instance. He was threatened with a maximum of four years' imprisonment and the withdrawal of his license as a doctor. Murray's lawyers announced an appeal against the verdict.

On November 29, 2011, the court set the sentence to four years in prison without parole. This corresponds to the maximum penalty. The judge justified his decision by saying that Murray had violated his Hippocratic oath for money and prestige and abandoned Jackson as a personal physician. In addition, he shows no remorse and blames the victim.

On October 28, 2013, Murray was released early, two years after his conviction for good conduct and overcrowded prisons. In January 2014, a Los Angeles appeals court upheld the verdict. Murray had previously appealed based on procedural errors.
