Consolea rubescens is a species of plant in the genus Consolea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet rubescens means 'becoming red, reddening'.

description

Consolea rubescens grows upright, tree-shaped with a branched crown and reaches heights of up to 6 meters. The trunk, which is almost cylindrical at the base, is slightly compressed to the side. It reaches a diameter of up to 15 centimeters and is reinforced with tufts of thorns up to 8 centimeters long or without thorns. The elongated to egg-shaped, dark green to reddish green, up to 25 centimeters long shoot sections are only nested in the youth stage. There are several whitish, needle-like thorns that are 1 to 6 inches long, but can sometimes be missing.

The red, orange or yellow flowers are up to 6 centimeters long and 2 centimeters in diameter. The egg-shaped to spherical, reddish fruits reach a diameter of up to 8 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Consolea rubescens is common in the Lesser Antilles , the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico .

It was first described as Opuntia rubescens in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Charles Lemaire placed them in the genus Consolea in 1862 . A synonym is Consolea moniliformis subsp. rubescens (Salm-Dyck ex DC.) Guiggi (2007).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
