Construção is the fifth album by the Brazilian musician Chico Buarque , released in 1971 . It marks a clear break in his work and is now considered one of the most important albums of Brazilian music.

Emergence

In 1968, Chico Buarque had to leave Brazil, ruled by a military dictatorship under Artur da Costa e Silva , after he came into conflict with the law because of his first play, Roda Viva . Buarque went into exile in Italy, but returned in 1970. Although he was not arrested, he came under heavy pressure from the censors. During this time, Buarque Construção played a.

The album was released in 1971, a CD version for the first time in 1990.

style

Artistically, Construção represented a clear break in Buarque's work. His music before exile was light bossa nova without great depth, or as Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha later wrote: “Whether old or young, rich or poor, communist or capitalist, everyone loved Chico, the nice green-eyed young singer ... until about 1968. ” Vinícius de Moraes co-wrote several pieces, Tom Jobim and Toquinho on individual pieces . Minha História (Gesùbambino) was an adaptation of Lucio Dallas' piece 4 Marzo 1943 , commonly called Gesu Bambino .

The details make it clear that the album is not just a collection of songs, but rather a closely related work. At the end of the first page the crescending title piece surprisingly turns over and takes up the text and music of the opener Deus Lhe Pague in a reprise , which results in a suite character for the first page .

Texts

Construção is dark and dramatic, the lyrics deal with death, the routines of everyday life, separation and exile, and subliminally they criticize the military dictatorship. The nostalgic themes familiar in his texts before 1968 gave way to an almost hallucinatory treatment of the disappointments and tragedies of everyday life. Buarque emphatically evokes the dehumanization triggered by work, marriage, routine, the system ”.

music

The album was based on samba and bossa nova and all instruments were acoustic, so it was clearly distanced from the simultaneous flow of tropicalismo . He was accompanied on some pieces by MPB-4 , one of the most important vocal groups of the Música Popular Brasileira, and Tom Jobim on the piano. The arrangements were complex and refined and did not shy away from dissonance. The influence of Rogerio Duprat is clearly audible in the orchestra .

reception

At the time of its release, almost all of the tracks were hits, and the album is now considered a classic. The Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone leads Construção at number 3 of his "list of the 100 most important records of Brazilian music" and concludes: "A language as direct as possible under the circumstances, great melodies. Significance and sense of responsibility in one of the most important Brazilian records. "

In a list of the "100 best records of the century" compiled by the Viva Zwei broadcast Wah² and the magazine spex in 2001, the album was listed at number 54. In a review from Zeit Online in 2006, the album was “a milestone in pop music that is at least equal to Pet Sounds from the Beach Boys in its harmonious ingenuity and the finesse of the arrangements. Lyrically, however, the record is superior ”.
