The Convento do Carmo is a former monastery of the Carmelite Order in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It was built between 1389 and 1423 on a vow made by Marshal Nuno Álvares Pereira . The building complex includes the church Igreja do Carmo , as a splendid specimen of the Lisbon Gothic applies.

The building was destroyed in the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755 . The restoration initiated by Queen Maria came to a halt after the secularization of the monastic orders of 1834, after only one wing of the monastery had been restored. The headquarters of the Portuguese National Guard is located there today . The Museu Arqueológico do Carmo is housed in the ruins of the monastery church . In the roofless nave , concerts are also held in summer due to the excellent acoustics .

From the Rossio and the Elevador de Santa Justa (also called Elevador do Carmo ), today's ruin immediately catches the eye.

In 2016, a redesign of the area by the architect Alvaro Siza was completed, a viewing terrace to Rua do Carmo and a passage through the backyards to Rua Garrett were created . After a devastating fire in 1988, Siza had already directed the reconstruction of the Chiado district .
