Copiapoa cinerea is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cinerea comes from Latin and means 'chalky' or 'gray-white'.

Copiapoa cinerea grows individually later from the base or shortly above branching and forming groups. The spherical to cylindrical shaped shoots are extremely variable. They are up to 1.3 meters high, gray with a white layer of wax. The 12 to 37  ribs are broad and blunt. The thorns are very variable in color, color and length. One to two central spines are 1.3 to 3.3 inches long. Up to seven radial spines are 0.5 to 2 inches long.

The flowers are yellow to yellow with a pink or red tinge. They are 1.5 to 2.5 inches long and measure up to 2.5 inches in diameter. The cream-colored, pink or reddish fruits have few scales.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa cinerea is mostly found near the coast in Chile in the Antofagasta region between Paposo and Chañaral .

It was first described in 1860 as Echinocactus cinereus by Rudolph Amandus Philippi . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 to the genus Copiapoa established by them . Further synonyms are Copiapoa cinerea var. Columna-alba (F.Ritter) Backeb. (1962) and Copiapoa cinerea subsp. columna-alba (F.Ritter) DRHunt (2002).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
