Werner Bartens (* 1966 in Göttingen ) is a German doctor , historian , science journalist and non-fiction author .

Career

Werner Bartens attended the Hainberg-Gymnasium in Göttingen and, after graduating from high school, studied medicine, history and German at the universities of Giessen , Freiburg , Montpellier and Washington DC from 1985 to 1993, and passed the US state examination in medicine in 1992. Research stays at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (Maryland) followed . In 1993 he also passed the German state examination in medicine at the University of Freiburg and then did his doctorate on the topic: Influence of genes on premature heart attack . In 1995 the master's degree in history and German studies followed in Freiburg. The subject of his master's thesis was race theories of the 19th and 20th centuries. After working as a doctor at the University Hospitals in Freiburg and Würzburg , another research stay at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology followed . From 1997 Bartens worked as a book author, translator, freelance journalist and editor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the daily newspaper and the Badische Zeitung . Since 2005 he has been working as an editor in the science department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, since 2008 as managing editor.

In addition to his journalistic work, he has published numerous books with a total circulation of 1 million copies, which have so far been translated into 14 languages. Some of them such as B.
