Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in Central Europe, southern northern Europe and northern southern Europe, as well as in North America. The southern distribution includes all of France, Switzerland, Italy from the southern slope of the Alps to Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany and the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula to Bosnia and Herzegovina . The northern distribution includes the British Isles , Denmark and the south of Norway, Sweden and Finland. In Central Europe, the species can be found in the lowlands down to low mountain ranges and valleys and is frequently encountered.

The larvae can be found from August, through autumn and winter through to spring, occasionally through May and June under rotting plant material and compost, especially on rotting beets , but also under the moist bark of deciduous trees. In winter, they often appear in cellars on rotting supplies (potatoes etc.), in stables and chaff, and in mole nests. The development to the adult animal is usually completed in the spring, it is not uncommon to find the animals swarming on house walls in the evening.
