Coradion is a species of butterfly fish (Chaetodon) withonly three species. It occurs in the central Indo-Pacific from southern Japan to the Andaman Sea , northwestern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef , Papua New Guinea and Tonga .
features
Coradion species become 15 to 18 centimeters long. They are very high back, the height of the body often exceeds the body length. Their muzzle is short. The basic color is the same in all species and is silvery-white with four broad yellowish-brown transverse bands, one over the eye, two from the hard-rayed section of the dorsal fin to the dark ventral fins and the last from the soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin to the soft-rayed section of the anal fin. There is a black band on the tail fin stalk. Eye spots can be present on the soft rayed part of the dorsal fin and the soft rayed area of the anal fin.
Fin formula : Dorsal VIII – X / 24–33, Anale III / 17–22.
Systematics
Coradion is the sister group of a clade of Chelmonops and Chelmon .
Way of life
Coradion species live in coral reefs , over sandy areas between the reefs and on steep slopes with a dense stony coral growth, young fish in lagoons near sponges . Adult Coradion live in pairs. They feed on invertebrates, mainly of amphipods (amphipods), which they scour sponge surfaces, and sponges. They are more shy than other butterfly fish.
