Coral Harbor , Nunavut Territory , Kivalliq Region is located on the south coast of Southampton Island on the northern edge of Hudson Bay . The settlement bears the Inuktitut name Salliq (ᓴᓪᓕᖅ / ᓴᓪᓖᑦ), "large flat island in front of the mainland", and has almost 900 inhabitants (94% of them Inuit ). The name Coral Harbor indicates that corals grew here in times of warmer climates , the fossils of which are still found today.

history

The English explorer Thomas Button was the first European to come to the south coast of Southampton Island in 1604. 1824 anchored at Cape Pembroke in front of the Coats Island captain George Francis Lyon with "HMS Griper" in the south .

In the second half of the 19th century, European and American whalers came to the rich fishing grounds off the island. They found a very isolated and shy group of people, the Sallirmiut ("people of Salliq"), who are considered to be possible descendants of Eskimos of the Dorset culture . When the Scottish whaling ship "Active" landed in 1902, the Sallirmiut, who were not immune to it, suffered a virulent gastrointestinal infection from which most died. 64 kilometers southeast of the Coral Harbor settlement, a Sallirmiut camp region (with remains of “Qarmait”, sod houses) can be visited at the “Native Point” - Alijivik, also known as the “lost city of the north”.

When the Hudson's Bay Company moved its original trading post on the offshore Coats Island to the place of today's Coral Harbor in 1924 , many Inuit ("Aivilingmiut") moved here from the mainland camps of the Kivalliq region. In order to have enough hunters and trappers, the Hudson's Bay Company also recruited more Inuit ("Uqqumiut") from Baffin Island and North Québec and brought them to Southampton Island with their transport ship Nascopie . In 1926 the Oblate Missionaries Father Emmanuel Duplain and Brother Prime Girard founded a mission station; at that time about 220 Inuit lived here.

During the Second World War , an American military airfield was built on the outskirts of Coral Harbor in 1941 as a base for planes brought to Europe. A school was built in 1950 and an infirmary in 1963.

traffic

North-west of the municipality is the municipality's local airport ( IATA : YZS, ICAO : CYZS), which has a gravel runway of 1,526 meters in length. Reachable is Coral Harbor Airport with regional airlines from Rankin Inlet .

climate

According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , the climate is classified as a subarctic climate (Dfc).
