Rankin Inlet , Canada, on the west coast of Hudson Bay , is the second largest community in Nunavut and the center of the Kivalliq region with around 2,580 inhabitants (78% of them Inuit ) . The settlement bears the Inuktitut name Kangiqiniq (ᑲᖏᕿᓂᖅ), "deep inlet".

history

Named after John Rankin, a 17th century British Royal Navy officer, Rankin Inlet was founded in 1955 by North Rankin Nickel Mines Ltd. Founded as a mining, administrative and transport center after nickel was first discovered in 1929. If only a few people lived here before, the opening of the mine attracted Inuit people looking for work from a wide area. The settlement developed rapidly and gained a relatively high economic strength thanks to the mining company. Just five years after it was founded, there was a warehouse for the Hudson's Bay Company , a hospital, three churches and, increasingly, administrative buildings and many residential buildings for the employees. But by 1962 the mineral deposits were exhausted and the mine was abandoned. With great effort, new sources of economic activity were developed, including a trading center, fish processing industry and handicraft workshops .

Significant evidence of earlier settlement in the surrounding area can be found on the Meliadine River, which flows northeast of Rankin Inlet into Hudson Bay: Ijiraliq, a 15th-century Thule settlement uncovered in the Igalugaarjuup Nunanga Territorial Park .

When the capital was chosen for Nunavut in 1995, Rankin Inlet ended up in second place behind Iqaluit .
