The coral moss ( Corallina officinalis ) is a type of red algae .
description
The thallus is stiffened as hard as a rock by calcareous deposits and therefore stands upright on the ground. It is pink-red with a crust-shaped basal disk. From it arise two to seven (in extreme cases up to 12) centimeters long, coral-like articulated, steeply rounded or compressed stems. These are pinnate opposite and between 0.5 and 2 millimeters thick. The limbs are club-shaped.
The nemathecia , specialized sections of the thallus in which the reproductive organs are formed, are sunk into the tips of the branches.
In strong sunlight or after they have died, the pink color fades and they are pure white.
distribution
The coral moss attaches itself to stones and rocks, preferring surf-protected areas in the lower tidal zone up to 18 meters deep (in rare cases up to 29 meters). This alga can also be found in abundance in tidal pools , where it can develop well, but only if these are located on the Atlantic coasts, in the North Sea (around the island of Helgoland ), in the Mediterranean or in the western Baltic Sea .
use
In some European areas, coral moss has been used in the past to treat parasitic worm diseases. The alga contains, among other things, pentaaspartic acid and various peptides .
Common names
The other common German-language names exist or existed for coral moss: claws, sea moss and worm moss.
