The plant was first discovered in Puerto Rico in Los Indios in 1886, between Guayanilla and the Barinas district in Yauco. A year later she was found in Guánica. Individual specimens have been found on the island of Vieques off Puerto Rico . In 1995, 15 specimens were found near El Peñón in Peñuelas , Puerto Rico. This location is a subtropical dry forest on limestone; The tree species growing there include Bourreria succulenta var. succulenta , Bucida buceras and Bursera simaruba . The average rainfall there is less than 66 centimeters.

Two confirmed occurrences at Anegada are in the western part of the island and cover an area of less than 5 km². Cordia rupicola grows there on limestone and on sand dunes, but seems to prefer limestone.
