Cornelius Carl Souchay
Cornelius Carl Souchay (born December 1, 1768 in Frankfurt am Main ; † May 27, 1838 in Frankfurt am Main) was an international cloth wholesaler.
Life
Cornelius Souchay was the son of the preacher in the Frankfurt French Reformed congregation Jean-Daniel Souchay de la Duboissière (1736–1811) and his wife Elisabeth (Lily) Souchay de la Duboissière nee. Tree cutter (1743–1771). Cornelius Souchay, who belongs to a Huguenot family and is married to the daughter of the monastery administrator Helene Schunck (born December 10, 1774 in Schlüchtern; † March 8, 1851 in Frankfurt am Main), founded the trading house Schunck, Souchay & Co. in Frankfurt . Century, especially during the continental block, became important in the cloth trade. Souchay, who had already become very wealthy at this time, successfully expanded business relationships and opened branches in London, Manchester, Milan, Moscow and Riga. Numerous partner companies supplemented the trading network ( F. Gruber & Co. in Genoa, Carlo Wedekind & Co. in Palermo, etc.).
Cornelius Souchay was also active as an art sponsor. The salon his wife in Villa Am Fahrtor in Frankfurt was a social and cultural center.
His sons Jean (builder of Schloss Eckberg near Dresden), Charles (owner of Schloss Neuhof near Coburg) and Eduard, as well as his granddaughter Cécile Charlotte Sophie Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his great-grandson Max Weber, have achieved importance.
