The Corno Stella is located in the Piedmontese Gessotal (it. Val Gesso ) in the province of Cuneo close to the border with France . Together with Monte Argentera , Monte Matto and Monte Stella , it forms the 'Argentera Massif' of the Maritime Alps .

Although the mountain is only 3,050 m high, it was long considered impregnable and was first climbed in 1903 by Victor de Cessole and his guides Jean Plent and Andrea Ghigo .
