Corrado Barbagallo (born December 1, 1877 in Sciacca , † April 16, 1952 in Turin ) was an Italian historian who initially dealt with ancient economic history, but increasingly dealt with recent history in the course of the First World War .

Life

Corrado Barbagallo studied in Florence , where he dealt with historical materialism in a small publication from 1899 at the latest . He taught economic history from 1926 to 1927 at the University of Catania , then until 1947 at the University of Naples and then at the University of Turin . In 1917 he founded the Nuova Rivista Storica , which he directed until the year he died. Because of the racist legislation of the Mussolini regime , Gino Luzzatto had to leave the editorial group. In 1952, after Barbagallo's death, the group consisted of Gino Luzzatto, Piero Pieri, Guido Porzio and Ettore Rota.

His earlier work dealt with ancient economic history. His work La fine della Grecia antica appeared in 1905 , and two years later his Contributo alla storia economica dell'antichità . In 1912 he published a work on the Roman emperor Julianus Apostata .

In particular after the First World War , he dealt with recent history, such as the outbreak of war, but also the history of industrialization. From 1931 to 1938 he wrote his Storia Universale in five volumes, which had a second edition from 1951 to 1954. In 1937 he dealt with the Ethiopian War, which had taken place from October 1935 to May 1936, then with the Soviet Union , and finally with British colonialism in India. In the post-war years he published, among other things, on fascism and the situation in southern Italy.
