Corsia arfakensis is a loose leaf green plant type from the family of Corsiaceae . The species wasfirst describedby Lilian Suzette Gibbs in 1917.

features

Like all species of the genus also has Corsia arfakensis the photosynthesis abandoned and therefore forms no chlorophyll more. Instead, it lives myco-heterotrophically on a fungus .

Corsia arfakensis is a perennial plant that only grows above ground during flowering. A cylindrical, narrowly grooved stem up to 25 centimeters long sprouts from the rhizome . The foliage is 8 to 12 millimeters long and two-veined. The bracts are the same as the leaves.

The upright individual flowers are terminal and are on flower stalks that are 2.5 to 4.5 inches long and cylindrical. Of the six petals (three tepals each in two petal circles) five are linear, blunt, 8 to 13 millimeters long and 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide, three-veined and finely papillary at the edge.

The top sixth, the so-called labellum , is heart-shaped, blunt, smooth and greatly enlarged (15 to 18 millimeters long and 12 to 15 millimeters wide), its base is heart-shaped. Eight side ribs extend from the central rib on each side. The callus is crescent-shaped, finely papillary , 2.5 millimeters long and 5 millimeters wide and has a rounded point at the tips. 17 or 18, 1.2 to 3 millimeters long, hairy, lamellar secondary calluses extend from the callus.

At the base, the labellum is directly fused with the approximately 0.5 millimeter long gynostemium . The free stamens are 1.5 millimeters long, the anthers 0.5 millimeters wide and 1.2 millimeters long. The smooth ovary is 8 to 12 millimeters long, the capsule up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution area

Corsia arfakensis was collected in the Arfak Mountains on the Vogelkop Peninsula at 1,830 m altitude and on the island of Yapen , north of New Guinea . Corsia triceratops was also found at the location in Japan .
