Corsia haianjensis is a loose leaf green plant from the family of Corsiaceae .

features

Like all species of the genus also has Corsia haianjensis the photosynthesis abandoned and therefore forms no chlorophyll more. Instead, it lives myco-heterotrophically on a fungus .

Corsia haianjensis is a perennial plant that only grows above ground during flowering. A reddish flesh-colored stalk up to 12 centimeters long and angular with four or five grooves sprouts from the rhizome . The foliage is pointed, 7 to 10 millimeters long, the five nerves are reddish flesh-colored. The bracts are the same as the leaves.

The upright single flowers are pale purple with dark purple stripes, terminal and stand on pedicels that are 8 to 10 millimeters long. Of the six petals (three tepals each in two petal circles) five are lanceolate-linear, pointed, 4 to 5 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide, three-veined and smooth.

The top sixth, the so-called labellum , is reddish flesh-colored, heart-shaped, pointed and greatly enlarged (around 9 millimeters long and 8.5 millimeters wide), its base is heart-shaped. From the middle rib, which is forked at the tip, eight or nine side ribs go off to each side. The callus is arrowhead-shaped, 4 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide, pointed, finely papillary at its tip and merges at its base with the base of the labellum. Six to eight lamellar additional calluses with hairy roots extend from the callus.

At the base, the labellum is directly fused with the approximately 1 millimeter long gynostemium . The free stamens are 1.5 millimeters long, the anthers 0.7 millimeters long. The style is 2 millimeters, the smooth ovary 8 to 10 millimeters, the dark brown capsule fruit 2 centimeters long.

Distribution area

Corsia haianjensis was only picked up once at an altitude of 1500 meters on Mount Haianja on the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands .

Systematics

Corsia haianjensis was first described by Pieter van Royen in 1972 and is particularly close to Corsia clypeata and Corsia boridiensis . Like this, it is placed in the sessilis section , since the labellum is directly fused with the gynostemium.
