Coryphantha octacantha is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet octacantha is derived from the Greek words okto for 'eight' and akanthos for 'sting' or 'thorn' and refers to the number of radial spines of the species.
description
Coryphantha octacantha grows individually or in groups. The elongated to short cylindrical, olive-green shoots reach heights of up to 30 centimeters and more with diameters of up to 10 centimeters. The square, up to 30 millimeters long warts are conical and loosely arranged. The axillae have white wool and one or two red nectar glands. The one or two brownish central spines are strong, straight, protruding and up to 2 centimeters long. The seven to eight yellowish radial spines have a darker tip. They are thin, stiff and straight, and are up to 1.5 centimeters in length.
The lemon-yellow flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The elongated fruits are up to 2.5 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Coryphantha octacantha is common on calcareous alluvial soil in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas .
The first description as Mammillaria octacantha by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1923 in the genus Coryphantha . A nomenclature synonym is Cactus octacanthus (DC.) Kuntze (1891). Numerous species are synonymous with the species.
Coryphantha octacantha is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
