Coryphantha poselgeriana is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet poselgeriana honors the German doctor, chemist and botanist Heinrich Poselger (1818–1883), who collected succulent plants in North America from 1849 to 1851.

description

Coryphantha poselgeriana grows individually with spherical to egg-shaped, light blue-gray to blue-green shoots , which reach heights of 10 to 17 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 15 centimeters. The up to 20 millimeters long warts are hemispherical to broadly conical. The axillae are bare. Occasionally, red nectar glands are present. The lowest resemble the central spine, the upper are clustered together.

The yellow or light pink- red flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The green fruits are up to 2 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha poselgeriana is widespread in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Durango , Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí on alluvial soils with almost no vegetation.

The first description as Echinocactus poselgerianus by Albert Gottfried Dietrich was published in 1851. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Coryphantha in 1923 .

Included in the species as synonyms are Mammillaria salm-dyckiana var. Brunnea Salm-Dyck (1850, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 43.1), Mammillaria salm-dyckiana var. Brunnea (Salm-Dyck) Unger (1986), Mammillaria salm- dyckiana Scheer ex Salm-Dyck (1850, discarded name ICBN -Article 57), Coryphantha salm-dyckiana (Scheer ex Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose (1923), Echinocactus salm-dyckianus (Scheer ex Salm-Dyck) Poselg. L.Bremer (1977), Cactus Salm-dyckianus Kuntze (1891), mammillaria valida J.A.Purpus (1911, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 53.1), mammillaria kieferiana hort. ex Boed. (1828), Coryphantha kieferiana (hort. Ex Boed.) A. Berger (1929), Coryphantha poselgeriana var. Valida Heinrich (1961) and Coryphantha valida L. Bremer (1977).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
