Coryphantha sulcata is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet sulcata comes from Latin , means 'furrowed' and refers to the warts of the species. English common names are “Finger Cactus”, “Nipple Cactus” and “Pineapple Cactus”.

Coryphantha sulcata often forms groups. The spherical to egg-shaped, green shoots reach heights of 4 to 13 centimeters and the same diameter. The conical warts, which are up to 12 millimeters long, are loosely arranged. Nectar glands are often present in the wart groove . The one to three central spines , which can occasionally be missing, are needle-like and 0.9 to 1.2 centimeters long. They are initially yellow or pink and later turn gray. At least one of them is upright, the rest are bent back. The eight to 14 whitish, 0.8 to 1.8 centimeters long radial spines are needle-like and radiating.

The yellow flowers have a red throat, they are up to 6 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The ellipsoidal, green fruits have lengths of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha sulcata is distributed in the United States in the south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León and Tamaulipas on alluvial plains with limestone gravel.

The first description as Mammillaria sulcata by George Engelmann was published in 1845. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Coryphantha in 1923 . Reto F. Dicht and Adrian D. Lüthy treated Coryphantha sulcata in 2001 as a synonym for Coryphantha elephantidens .

Nomenclatural synonyms are Cactus scolymoides var. Sulcatus (Engelm.) JMCoult. (1894), Mammillaria radians var. Sulcata (Engelm.) K.Schum. (1898), Cactus sulcatus (Engelm.) Small (1903) and Coryphantha radians var. Sulcata (Engelm.) Y.Itô (1952). Mammillaria strobiliformis Muehlenpf was included as a synonym for the species . (1848, nom. Illeg. ICBN -Article 53.1), Mammillaria calcarata Engelm. (1850), Coryphantha calcaratus (Engelm.) Lem. (1868), Cactus calcaratus (Engelm.) Kuntze (1891), Coryphantha roederiana Boed. (1929), Coryphantha obscura Boed. (1930) and Coryphantha speciosa Boed. (1930).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
