Costessey Hall about 1850

Costessey Hall (pronounced and sometimes written as Cossey Hall , also written as Cotesby Hall ) was a manor house in the village of Costessey 6.5 km west of Norwich in the English county of Norfolk . The Costessey manor was first mentioned in 1066 when King William the Conqueror gave it to Alain the Red , Earl of Richmond , as a fief.

In 1555, Queen Mary I gave them to Sir Henry Jerningham at the introduction of Lady Jane Gray as a reward for his assistance. At that time it included 22 subordinate lords in Norfolk and additional manors in Hereford and Gloucestershire . Sir Jerningham had a new mansion built south of the River Tud that flows through Costessey. The old mansion remained on the north side of the river and is still in Costessey Park today . Presumably King Henry VIII gave it to his wife Anna von Kleve .

From 1826 to 1836 JC Buckler built a neo-Gothic castle for Lord Stafford Jerningham that was many times larger than that of the original mansion from the Tudor period .

In 1913 the contents of the house were sold and the mansion remained empty. At the beginning of the First World War it was under the command of the War Ministry. In 1919 it was decided to have the house demolished, which was carried out in 1925. The bell block on the 18th hole of the Costessey Park Golf Course is the only part of the building that has survived to this day.
