Costus comosus is a species of the Costaceae family . It is found from southern Central America to northern South America.

Costus comosus is an herbaceous plant and reaches a height of up to 2.5 meters.

The leaves are densely downy hairy on both sides, 10 to 35 centimeters long and 2.5 to 8 centimeters wide. The cone-like, egg-shaped to cylindrical inflorescences are 6 to 10, rarely up to 12 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The bracts are green to red.

The crown is densely hairy, rarely glabrous, the yellow labellum is tubular.

Costus comosus is native from southern Mexico via Costa Rica to Colombia and northern Venezuela.

Systematics

The species was first described by William Roscoe in 1807 .

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Costus comosus var. Bakeri (K.Schum.) Maas : It occurs from southern Mexico to Ecuador.
  • Costus comosus var. Comosus : It occurs from Costa Rica to Venezuela.
