Location of Cottewitz in Saxony

Cottewitz is a right side of the Elbe situated district of the Saxon community Zeithain in the district of Meissen .

geography

The place is located directly on the Elbe between the places Lorenzkirch and Kreinitz on the Elbe Cycle Path . To the west of Cottewitz lies Strehla on the other side of the Elbe , and to the northeast is Kreinitz. The Gohrischheide extends east of Cottewitz. The place was called a Gutsweiler and Häuslerzeile with manor blocks around 1900.

history

Cottewitz was first mentioned in 1445. The place name was changed several times, so Cottewitz was called Cotwuss in 1503, 1524 Kottwitz, 1538 Cotwis, 1540 Kothwitz and Cottewitz, with Zschaepe 1734 and 1836 Kottewitz (on the Elbe). It was not until 1875 that the current spelling of the place name Kottewitz b. Strehla (Cottewitz) enforced.

The place arose from feudal hooves created and cultivated by free nobles and castle men to supply Strehla Castle. The Cottewitz Vorwerk was later built on this land. In 1540 there was a Vorwerk, from 1696 a manor. In 1583 the village and the manor belonged to the von Pflugk family. From 1539 Cottewitz was parish in Lorenzkirch and from 1930-2001 belongs to the parish of Lorenzkirch. The Cottewitz children went to the Lorenzkirchen school from the start.

With Lorenzkirch, Zschepa and Kreinitz, the place is one of the lowest points in the country with its location in the Elbe meadows and close to the river. The Elbe became the determining factor in the life of the inhabitants. In the church visit of 1840 it can be read: “... the river also overflows it when it breaks the fetters of the ice, not infrequently when the reaper sharpens the sickle to harvest, with all its floods and sinks it into a sea of need Only in 1841 did the residents of the Cottewitz thresher houses have to be picked up from the roof into the rescue vehicle; the water for drinking and for preparing food was sent to us in barrels on barges by the rule at Kreynitz from the cellars of the castle, where the cloudy tide had at least not penetrated from above. However, massive ice blocks often make such communication impossible. It hardly needs to be said what devastation is occurring in the fields, buildings and farms, and under what worries and exertions everything can be restored and overcome where otherwise possible. 1784, 1799, 1820 (where in Großzschepa 5 goods perished at the same time due to fire when the flood was high) and 1828 as well as the summer water of 1815 and 1824, where the inhabitants here spoiled the harvest, were years of greatest hardship for this area. Only the familiarization and the love for the fatherly soil, as well as the experience: God is our help in need and blesses again, makes the inhabitants strong to overcome, and the proofs and monuments of helping kindness are gratefully preserved. ”(Christ. Gotth Hoyme, pastor in Lorenzkirch 1824-1853) On April 19, 1833, a fire broke out in Cottewitz in the morning, which laid almost the entire village to rubble and ashes.

The Saxon rural community order of 1838 gave Cottewitz independence as a rural community. From 1696 Cottewitz belonged to the Grossenhain office and from 1856 to the Strehla court office. From 1875 the village belonged to the Oschatz district administration. Saxony came to the Soviet occupation zone after the Second World War and later to the GDR. After the territorial reform in 1952, Cottewitz was assigned to the Riesa district in the Dresden district . After reunification and reunification , the village became part of the newly founded Free State of Saxony . The following regional reforms in Saxony assigned Cottewitz to the district of Riesa-Großenhain in 1994 and to the district of Meißen in 2008. Cottewitz has been part of the Zeithain community since 1994. The Elbe continues to be a danger to all residents, as the Cottewitzers had to experience again in August 2002. Of 12 recorded and damaged properties, 8 were only habitable to a limited extent, and 4 were uninhabitable. In June 2013 the Elbe flooded its banks again and caused great damage.
