Cottonwood is a city in the southwest of the US state Minnesota . It is located in Lyon County and has around 1100 inhabitants.

The small town of Cottonwood is located northeast of Lyon County on Cottonwood Lake. The 131 hectare and a maximum of 2.1 meters deep lake extends in the west of the city, but officially does not belong to the city area. history

The area around today's city was first settled in 1871. Cottonwood was established in July 1888 as Section 9 in Lucas Township. The city got its name from the adjacent lake, on whose banks poplars (English cottonwood ) stand. On January 12, 1892, Cottonwood became a Village .
