Distribution and systematics

Cotyledon orbiculata is found in southern Angola , Namibia and South Africa in the fynbos , in the succulent karoo , on grassland and in the bushveld, mostly on rocks.

The first description by Carl von Linné was published in Species Plantarum in 1753 .

There are numerous synonyms .

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Cotyledon orbiculata var. Dactylopsis Toelken : Occurrence in South Africa in the provinces of the North Cape and Free State , on dolerite rocks in the grasslands; differs from the parent species in that it has short, bell-shaped, yellow flowers with fine red lines, the plants grow prostrate to upright and reach a height of around 15 centimeters. The gray shoots reach 15 millimeters in diameter. The crowded leaves are gray-green. The leaf blade is linear-lanceolate and petiolate to slightly flattened. It becomes 13 inches long and 1.3 inches wide. It is pointed at the tip and has a red tip. The inflorescence is up to 28 centimeters high and the flower stalks are up to 15 millimeters long. The corolla has a diameter of 7 millimeters at the base and becomes 10 millimeters long. The bent back corolla lobes are about 10 millimeters long. The slightly tapered nectar flakes are 1.5 millimeters long and wide.
