Coyote is a jazz album by pianist Per Henrik Wallin , recorded live in trio with Torbjörn Hultcrantz (bass) and Erik Dahlbäck (drums) on August 15, 1986 and October 12, 1987 for Sveriges Radio in Stockholm . The recordings appeared in 1998 on Dragon Records .

History and music of the album

Wallin occasionally recorded for Swedish radio in the 1970s and 1980s with the support of Bosse Broberg , head of the jazz department, mostly in trio. Since 1978 he has been working with his trio of Torbjörn Hultcrantz and Erik Dahlbäck.

When the material was broadcast in 1987, the pianist said in an interview about his musical development over the last decade: Hopefully the music will have more clarity and straightforwardness . The open structure of the recordings should prevent stagnation; Per Henrik Wallin had therefore brought new material into the trio's repertoire that was only rehearsed once before the recordings. Most of his compositions consisted only of sketches or fragments of his ideas that served as starting points for the trio improvisations. The recordings from October 1987 were among the pianist's last sessions before his serious car accident, which left him paralyzed down the waist.

reception

Richard Cook and Brian Morton awarded the album the highest rating of four stars in The Penguin Guide to Jazz . For Cook / Morton, the music on Coyote goes through "lightning-fast changes in mood, with amazing pyrotechnics flying around". The highlights include the authors The Strange Adventures of Jesper Klint .

Thomas Millroth described Per Henrik Wallin in his overview of the Swedish improvisation scene as "one of the most original and dynamic [players] in Swedish jazz", whose music is "eager and restless" and with "sudden changes, tempo changes and immense tonal and dynamic diversity" be provided. He particularly emphasized Wallin's trio recordings on Coyote and his duo recordings with Sven-Åke Johansson ( Magnetic Dogs ( FMP , 1986)).
