Craig House ( Gaelic : Taigh na Creige ) is the capital of the Hebrides -Insel Jura and belongs administratively to the Council Area Argyll and Bute . In 1971 it had a population of 113 people. The place is located in a sheltered bay of the Jura Sound on the east side of the island. In order to enable the mooring of ships, a pier was built by Thomas Telford .
In the summer months there is a regular ferry service from Craighouse to the Scottish mainland to Tayvallich, but only as a passenger service. To get to Craighouse by car, you first have to take the ferry to the island of Islay , from where another ferry runs from Port Askaig over the Islay Sound to Feolin on Jura.
Craighouse has a primary school and the only hotel on the island of Jura. The Isle of Jura whiskey distillery , the only distillery on the island, has been operating in Craighouse with interruptions since 1810 .
