Creed (Vivaldi)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Credo in E minor ( RV 591) is the only surviving setting of the Nicano-Constantinopolitanum by Antonio Vivaldi . There is another setting (RV 592) the authenticity of which is doubted. The Credo is Vivaldi's only sacred choral work in several movements without solo parts.

Work description

The first two bars of violins I and II of RV 591.

The work was created between 1713 and 1717 during Vivaldi's first period at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice .

RV 591 consists of 4 sentences. Similar to In exitu Israel (RV 604), the choir has a simple rhythm of quarter and half notes in the first movement, while the orchestra plays eighth and sixteenth notes. The second movement is a short chorale episode in the stile antico , which borrows thematic material from Vivaldi's Magnificat (RV 610). Similar to the first, the fourth movement is based on a sixteenth-eighth note and closes with a fugue .

The first and last movements begin with a motif that is very similar to a passage from the Gloria (RV 588).

sentences

  1. Credo in unum Deum (Allegro)
  2. Et incarnatus est (Adagio)
  3. Crucifixus (Largo)
  4. Et resurrexit (Allegro)

Instrumentation: four-part mixed choir ( SATB ), strings (2 violins , viola ), basso continuo .

The performance lasts approx. 10 minutes.

Further settings

The Ryom directory lists a second setting of the Credo in G major by Vivaldi under RV 592, the authorship of which is, however, controversial. This composition is also attributed to Johann Adolph Hasse . Another setting in G major RV 797 is missing.
