Crichton ( Scottish Gaelic Crìochtàn ) is a hamlet consisting of a few houses in the Scottish Council Area Midlothian . It is located in the east of the region about four kilometers southwest of Pathhead and 14 kilometers southeast of central Edinburgh . A few hundred meters to the west flows the Tyne Water , the upper reaches of the Tyne .

history

In the late 14th century, John Crichton of Crichton had the oldest known building in Crichton built. At first it was a tower house , which was later expanded to form the fortress Crichton Castle under William Crichton, 1st Lord Crichton . After the abandonment of Crichton Castle in the 17th century, the Lairds of Crichton had the mansion Crichton House built. As Lord Chancellor of Scotland, Lord Crichton initiated the construction of the Crichton Collegiate Church near the fortress in the 1440s .

With Vogrie House , another mansion was built in the area of ​​Crichton in the 1870s. After James Dewar acquired the land in 1719, his descendants had the building erected on the site of a previous structure.
