Cristina Fontes Lima

Maria Cristina Lopes Almeida Fontes Lima (* 1958 in Praia , Cape Verde ) is a Cape Verdean politician and lawyer. From 2001 to 2016 she was a member of three Cape Verde governments in various functions. She is a member of the Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde (PAICV).

Career

Lima was born in Praia in 1958. Her father is from Santa Catarina , the mother from São Vicente . The paternal grandparents were born on Fogo and the maternal grandparents on São Nicolau . Lima lived in Angola as a teenager , where her parents worked in the 1970s. Here she began to be interested in politics. As a gift for graduation from high school, Lima received a trip to Cape Verde from her parents. Here she was allowed to set the national flag in the Estádio da Várzea during the independence celebrations on July 5th . Lima decided to stay in Cape Verde.

After completing secondary school, she studied law in Portugal , where she was active in the student movement. In the early 1980s she joined the public service in Cape Verde as a lawyer, where she was promoted to director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1984 Lima became a member of the PAICV and later became party leader for the capital Praia.

Lima became involved in the transition to democracy in the 1990s and in 1991 became the first woman on the PAICV Political Commission. She became party spokeswoman and moved into parliament as a member of the PAICV after the first multi-party elections in 1991 . In 1994 Lima went to the United States to study . In 1996 she received a Master of Public Administration from Southern Illinois University and followed her husband, who had lived in Togo since 1992 , to work at ECOWAS .

From 2001 Lima was a member of the government of Cape Verde. From 2001 to 2006 as Minister of Justice, then as Minister of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers, Minister for State Reforms and Defense Minister and from 2011 to 2016 as Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister.

In 2016 Lima ran unsuccessfully for the Praia City Council .

Lima went to East Timor and became an advisor in the ministry there for legislative reform and parliamentary affairs. Due to her experience as Health Minister Cape Verdes with the Ebola fever epidemic 2014 to 2016 in neighboring West Africa and the Zika virus epidemic 2015/2016 , she was appointed to the East Timorese Commission on March 23, 2020 to advise and evaluate strategies for the prevention and control of the coronavirus Pandemic (Komisaun Akompañamentu no Avaliasaun Estratéjia ba Prevensaun no Kombate Pandemia Koronavírus) after the first COVID-19 case was registered in the country.
