Santa Catarina is a concelho (district) in the Cape Verde Islands . It is located in the west of the island of Santiago about 30 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Praia and belongs to the administrative area of the Ilhas de Sotavento archipelago . In 2013 Santa Catarina had about 44,000 inhabitants. The main town of the municipality is Assomada with around 14,000 inhabitants.
Like many districts on the Cape Verde Islands, Santa Catarina also lives mainly from tourism .
