Christopher Martin Nigel "Chris" Jones (born November 19, 1945 in Altrincham ) is a former English football player . As a striker , he was initially at Manchester City , which won the English championship in the 1967/68 season , only a supplementary player, before he was more regular in the lower professional leagues at clubs such as Swindon Town , Walsall FC , York City and Rochdale AFC .
Athletic career
Jones began his career at Manchester City . There he was quite successful in his youth and in January 1964 was the club's first player to score a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup against FC Middlesbrough (6-1) , but in the senior division between 1965 and 1968 he was only a fixture in the reserve team . In the first team he was preferred to competitors such as Derek Kevan and Jimmy Murray in his position . So he had to wait until December 3, 1966 when he represented Mike Summerbee in the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest . On his second appearance, he scored his first goal against West Bromwich Albion (3-0). In the following season 1967/68 he completed only two championship games and so Jones contributed to winning the English championship in any case too little to receive an official medal. In July 1968, he finally moved to the third division Swindon Town .
In Swindon he helped the new team in its first season with seven goals for promotion to the second division . In the following three years, however, he completed only around half of the games and in January 1972 the club briefly loaned him to the third division club Oldham Athletic . In the following month he was transferred to FC Walsall within the Third Division . There he was a regular player until June 1973 and he achieved in the 1973/74 season for the first time in his career a double-digit yield of league goals. The move to league rivals York City followed , where Jones probably had his best career phase.
He scored his first goal on his debut against Charlton Athletic (4-2) and his successful strike partnership with Jimmy Seal was a decisive factor in York City's first promotion to the second division in 1974 . The club benefited from then on in the unfamiliar league from Jones' experience and this contributed against Cardiff City (1-0) to the first second division win of the club. After that he drew attention to himself with the two “double packs” to 2-0 and 3-2 against the later FA Cup finalists FC Fulham - he also scored two goals against the later promoted Norwich City to a narrow 3-2 win . In total, Jones scored 37 goals in 107 competitive games for York City before joining the fourth division Huddersfield Town in August 1976 . In the lowest professional game class, Jones let his career fade away, where he acted from July 1977 for the Doncaster Rovers , then from January 1978 on loan for Darlington FC and from 1978 again a little more regularly for the AFC Rochdale .
After his retirement as a professional athlete, the amateur club Bridlington Trinity was his last known station. Later on, Jones, who also worked as a substitute teacher at Tadcaster Grammar School , stayed on football mainly as a radio commentator, where he began to accompany games from his former club York City on BBC Radio York .
