Cristofano Allori: Judith with the head of Holofernes

Cristofano Allori , also Bronzino the Younger (born October 17, 1577 in Florence , † April 2, 1621 ibid) was an Italian painter .

life and work

Allori's father Alessandro Allori was next to Santi di Tito also a teacher of his son. In his development, Allori moved away from mannerism , to which his father belonged, and opened up to the Bolognese school . He painted altarpieces for Florentine churches and numerous portraits. His main work is Judith with the head of Holofernes , which symbolizes a fateful passion for him. Several copies of this work exist, one in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence (around 1610, oil on canvas) and one in the Queen's Gallery in Buckingham Palace in London (around 1613, oil on canvas). Another copy is in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna .

Allori worked with great care on each of his pictures, as evidenced by his numerous sketches and the delicacy of the detailed drawings. He combined constant training with role models such as Antonio da Correggio , Lodovico Cigoli and Santi di Tito with an intensive, often months-long study of models and nature. Such thoroughness prevented more extensive work, but enabled the painter to achieve such outstanding achievements as Judith with the head of Holofernes , on which he presumably portrayed his lover Mazzafirra and her mother. The pose of Judith, her detailed atlas dress and the contrast between the two women's faces allowed him to develop his fine light and color scheme, determined by the chiaroscuro. In addition, however, the figure representation and the scenic arrangement - such as in the picture Jupiter and Mercury - the distance to the Mannerists, such as Rosso Fiorentino , becomes clear.
