Systematics

Five subspecies have been described for the lattice autumn crocus:

  • Crocus cancellatus subsp. cancellatus : the upper bract is hidden by the lower one. The anthers are yellow. The stylus protrude more or less over the anthers. The subspecies occurs in southern Turkey, Lebanon and Israel.
  • Crocus cancellatus subsp. pamphylicus B.Mathew : The upper bract is visible. The anthers are white. The stylus protrude more or less over the anthers. The subspecies occurs in southern Turkey. Also considered by some authors as a separate species: Crocus pamphylicus (B.Mathew) Ruksans .
  • Crocus cancellatus subsp. mazziaricus (Herb.) B.Mathew : The upper bract is visible. The anthers are yellow. The stylus protrude far beyond the anthers. The subspecies occurs in the southern Balkans, Greece, and southern and western Turkey. Also considered by some authors as a separate species: Crocus mazziaricus Herb.
  • Crocus cancellatus subsp. lycius B. Mathew It occurs in southern Turkey. Also considered by some authors as a separate species: Crocus lycius (B.Mathew) Ruksans .
  • Crocus cancellatus subsp. damascenus (Herb.) B.Mathew It occurs from Turkey to Iran and to Israel. Also considered by some authors as a separate species: Crocus damascenus Herb.
