The Tuscan crocus ( Crocus etruscus ) or Rose Crocus is a plant from the genus of crocus ( Crocus ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

The Tuscan crocus is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 8 to 12 centimeters. The tuber shell is coarsely fibrous. At flowering time, the leaves are 5 to 6 millimeters wide and longer than the flowers. The throat is hairy. Only the outer bract around the perigone is present. The outer perigone measure 33 to 37 × 7 to 9 millimeters and are purple with darker stripes on the outside.

The flowering period extends from February to March.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 8 or 16.

Occurrence

The Tuscan crocus occurs in Italy in Tuscany and Elba. The species grows in maquis at altitudes of 100 to 1000 meters.

The Tuscan crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders and rock gardens. The species has been in culture since 1875 at the latest.
