Johann Adam Rieger (born July 16, 1753 in Orb ; † July 30, 1831 in Fulda ) was bishop of the newly founded diocese of Fulda .

Life

His high school became Rieger of the Jesuits - high schools in Mannheim and Worms , after which he studied in Heidelberg philosophy and in Mainz theology . On December 19, 1778, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mainz .

Assistant pastor, chaplain and pastor

His first pastoral activity was as an assistant pastor in several places, including Marburg-Bauerbach , until he was appointed chaplain and second court preacher at the court of Landgrave Friedrich zu Kassel in 1781 and worked as a pastor there in 1795 .

Canon and grand chaplain

In 1798 he became a canon in Amöneburg , and in 1808 he was appointed almsman to King Jérôme Bonaparte of Westphalia . When the last abbot and prince-bishop of Fulda, Adalbert von Harstall , died in 1814, Fulda did not receive a successor until 1829, the new diocese was now headed for the first time by a "civil-secular" priest.

On June 23, 1828, at the age of 76, Johann Adam Rieger was appointed bishop of the newly established diocese of Fulda, and he was consecrated as a bishop on September 21, 1829 by Johann Baptist von Keller . Johann Adam Rieger laid down his principles with his pastoral letter on the occasion of his assumption of office. During his short term in office, Bishop Rieger opposed the Hessian government several times , for example:

  • In August 1830 with his declaration against the ordinance on the exercise of the sovereign protection and supervisory right,
  • in January 1831 he turned against the constitutional charter of January 6, 1831 and
  • in July 1831 he argued against the establishment of a Catholic theological faculty at the University of Marburg .
