The settlement was founded in 1891 and named after George T. Crowell, the owner of the land on which the place was built. In December 1860, the Texas ranger Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross "liberated" Cynthia Ann Parker, who had been abducted by Indians 25 years earlier, and brought her back to her family against her will.
In 1892 Crowell became the administrative seat of the newly formed Foard County, developed into a commercial center and the county's largest city. In 1900 the place had 500 inhabitants. When Crowell was connected to the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway network in 1908, the town boomed and the population rose to 1,500 by 1925. In April 1942 a tornado destroyed 90% of the buildings, ten people were killed, 125 were injured and 1,500 residents were left homeless. After the city was rebuilt, the population reached 1,922 in 1950, decreased to 1,509 in 1980 and to 1,230 in 1990.
