The Cruach Ardrain is a 1046 meter high mountain in Scotland . The meaning of its Gaelic name is not entirely certain, a popular translation into English is The High Heap , in German about Hoher Haufen , similarly Hohe Halde . Another translation is Stack of the High Part , which means stack of the high parts . The Cruach Ardrain is located in the southern highlands south of the village of Crianlarich in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and is one of the Munros .

The massive and rocky mountain with a distinctive silhouette, clearly recognizable from a distance and built in the shape of a "Y", is clearly separated from the Ben More and Stob Binnein to the east by the two valleys Benmore Glen and Inverlochlarig Glen , which are connected by a low saddle . Its summit lies on the watershed between the east and west coast of Scotland. To the northwest, the deeply cut valley of the upper Falloch River , one of the tributaries of Loch Lomond , which rises in the summit area of the neighboring Beinn a 'Chroin to the west , separates the Cruach Ardrain from its neighbors. Two rocky ridges run out to the north, to the west in the Gray Heights and to the east, over the 980 meter high Top Stob Garbh in between, ending in the Stob Coire Bhuidhe . In the middle between the two ridges the steep Y Gully leads to the summit. To the south, a wide ridge about two kilometers long leads over a deeper saddle to the neighboring Beinn Tulaichean , another Munro. Many mountaineers combine climbing both mountains. The Cruach Ardrain can be climbed from Crianlarich in the north as well as from the south. The southern starting point is the small settlement Inverlochlarig west of Balquhidder . In the summit area, the Cruach Ardrain has two almost equally high summit heads, separated only by a slight depression. Sir Hugh Munro chose the northeastern summit head for his list of Munros . In the meantime, the western summit was rated as the higher, but now the northeast summit again.
