The Cryphaeaceae , German hiding fruit mosses , are a deciduous moss - family of the order Hypnales .
description
The species usually grow epiphytically or rarely on rock. The medium-sized plants with creeping, upright or hanging stems are slightly or regularly pinnately branched, sometimes also tree-shaped. The stem cross-section has no central strand. The leaves with a single rib are oval to lanceolate, the tip of the leaf is rounded to long and pointed. The leaf cells are short. The spore capsules with a very short seta are typically sunk into the perichaetial leaves. The capsule lid is conical to beaked, the small kalyptra is conical to bell-shaped. The outer peristome consists of 16 papillary teeth, the inner peristome is often reduced or rarely completely absent.
Distribution areas are mainly tropical, subtropical and temperate climates.
