The Cryphaeaceae , German hiding fruit mosses , are a deciduous moss - family of the order Hypnales .

description

The species usually grow epiphytically or rarely on rock. The medium-sized plants with creeping, upright or hanging stems are slightly or regularly pinnately branched, sometimes also tree-shaped. The stem cross-section has no central strand. The leaves with a single rib are oval to lanceolate, the tip of the leaf is rounded to long and pointed. The leaf cells are short. The spore capsules with a very short seta are typically sunk into the perichaetial leaves. The capsule lid is conical to beaked, the small kalyptra is conical to bell-shaped. The outer peristome consists of 16 papillary teeth, the inner peristome is often reduced or rarely completely absent.

Distribution areas are mainly tropical, subtropical and temperate climates.

Only one type of Cryphaea heteromalla is represented in Germany, Austria and Switzerland .
