The dam Crystal ( English Crystal Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric plant in Montrose County , State of Colorado , USA . It dams the Gunnison River to a reservoir ( English Crystal Reservoir ). The dam Morrow Point is 9.5 km (6  miles ) upriver; the small town of Montrose is approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the Crystal Dam. The dam and the reservoir are in the Curecanti National Recreation Area .

The dam is used to generate electricity. Construction of the dam began in 1972. It was completed in 1977. The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.

Barrier structure

The shut-off is a double-curved arch dam of concrete with a height of 98.5 m (323  ft ) above the foundation bed . The top of the wall is at an altitude of 2064 m (6772 ft) above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 189 m (620 ft). The thickness of the dam is 8.8 m (29 ft) at the base and 3 m (10 ft) at the top. The volume of the structure is 118,047 m³ (154,400  cubic yards ).

The flood relief consists of an uncontrolled overflow on the right side of the wall crest . A maximum of 1171 m³ / s (41,350 cft / s) can be discharged via the flood  discharge, and a maximum of 123 m³ / s (4350 cft / s) together via the turbine inlet and the bottom outlet .

Reservoir

At the normal storage target of 2059 m (6755 ft), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.37 km² (340  acres ) and holds 32 million m³ (26,000  acre-feet ) of water.

power plant

The power plant is located at the foot of the dam on the left side of the river. It went into operation in 1978. The installed capacity is 31.5  MW ; it was originally 28 MW. The performance of the Francis turbine was increased in 2004. The drop height is 63 m (207 ft). The power plant runs at the base load .

The average annual generation is around 138 (or 167.8) million  kWh .
