Ctulu at the Skald Festival 2018

Ctulu is an extreme metal band founded at the end of 2004 in Delmenhorst , Lower Saxony , whose members now live in Kiel, Bremen and Warsaw . The name Ctulu comes from the deity Cthulhu from the pantheon of gods devised by HP Lovecraft , which can be found in many of his stories. For the symmetry of the band logo, the two additional Hs have been removed from the original name. This measure is also rated as protection against copyright conflicts.

history

At the end of 2004, lead guitarist Mathias and singer Stefan - who was also a drummer at the time - founded Ctulu in Delmenhorst, back then as a project. In 2005, the first demo, Zins der Zeit , was released in-house .

After bassist Chrille and drummer Jan joined the band in 2006, Stefan concentrated only on singing, and the first concerts in Hamburg , Delmenhorst and Athens were played. Together, the Free Geister demo was recorded independently .

In 2007 Chrille left the band and was replaced by Mario. The following year, on May 2, 2008, the first full-fledged album Freie Geister was released via Northfire Records and Twilight Distribution. Between the recording and the release, Arne joined Ctulu as a rhythm guitarist. The following live activities include an appearance at the first Pagan Festival .

In 2009 Stefan left the band, followed by other concerts in Germany, but also in Denmark, Austria and the Netherlands with Mathias and Arne as singers. In autumn Rolf joined the band as singer and Martin on drums.

In 2010 Ctulu became known to a larger audience at the Ragnarök Festival in Rieden (Upper Palatinate) . A little later, Mario left the band.

In 2011 the second album Sarkomand was presented at the Ragnarök Festival , which was released on April 29, 2011 via Godeater Records. The bass parts were played by rhythm guitarist Arne. Bassist Paulo joined the band two months before the festival. In May 2011 it was announced that singer Rolf and bassist Paulo would leave the band that same year. The vacant positions were filled quickly, however. A bass player named Lasse and a singer named Lars were announced as replacements in late May 2011. The latter left the band at the end of September. Ctulu has been a quartet since September 2011.

In 2012 Ctulu played concerts in Celle , London, Athens and Limassol (Cyprus). In October, the band split from drummer Martin, who was replaced by Aeba's Infernal Disaster.

In 2013 they released Soul Mirror Splinters via Nocturnal Empire and Black Blood Records. The album is characterized by a more experimental nature and lyrically deals largely with the Esoteric Order of the Dagon. Concerts in Cyprus , Ireland , the Czech Republic and Germany followed .

In 2014 the band toured Austria and England with their current album and began songwriting for their fourth studio album. In addition, it celebrated its tenth anniversary with the first vinyl release that same year . For this purpose, the album Sarkomand, released in 2011, was reissued as an LP via Black Blood Records and Human To Dust Records.

In 2015 Ctulu did a tour through the Balkans with the French black / death metal band Necrowretch as well as appearances in Turkey and Russia . A short time later, bassist Lasse had to leave the band, but his seat was deliberately left vacant and thus continued as a trio.

This decision can be described as a turning point in Ctulus band history, as the band turned their back on their previous style and a musical realignment took place. The band broke away from the Swedish-inspired Black Metal and worked more often with dissonances. The minor harmonies that were mainly used so far disappear almost completely. Instead, the band is henceforth described as a mixture of " Behemoth , Slayer and Satyricon ".

With MDD Records, a new record label was found in early 2016, which re-released the album Sarkomand on CD with new artwork and bonus material. In addition, Ctulu played at some festivals in Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria.

In November 2016, the fourth studio album was released via MDD Records, which remained untitled.

In October 2017 the EP Cultus in Tenebris was released on the US label Static Tension.
