Cube World is a voxel -based indie open world - role-playing game , which of Picroma eK is sold. It is currently only available for Windows .

The alpha version of the game was offered as early access for sale via the developer's website from July 2013 . After years of radio silence and the lack of updates, the game finally appeared on Steam on September 30, 2019 .

Similar to other role-playing games, the computer game is primarily about fighting with creatures and fulfilling tasks. So new pieces of equipment can be found and improved. Experience points and level-ups are no longer available in the 2019 release version.

Due to the game world consisting of blocks and the early access model, the game has often been compared to Minecraft .

Gameplay

There is no set goal in Cube World. The main part of the game is fighting against different creatures, which becomes more and more complex with more difficult opponents , so you always have to find stronger equipment and improve it in order not to die. Items acquired in combat or collecting are kept in a categorized inventory and can either be used, processed into other items, or sold.

Cube World is played from a third-person perspective . There is the possibility of using the mouse wheel to zoom into a kind of first-person perspective , which lets the camera "float" over the head of the character. The world, which consists entirely of voxels of different sizes , can be partially destroyed with bombs , but unlike Minecraft , the player does not win any items.

The player has the option of crafting and can receive pets.

Character classes

A distinction is made between four different character classes, each with different characteristics. This includes appearance , weapon knowledge, special characteristics and role in a group. Each class is divided into two sub-classes, making a total of eight classes.

There are the following classes and subclasses:

  • Warrior
    • Berserk (berserk)
    • Guardian
  • Ranger
    • Sniper
    • Scout
  • Mage (magician)
    • Fire
    • Water
  • Rogue
    • Assassin (assassin)
    • Ninja (ninja)

While there were experience points and the possibility of leveling up the character with a skill system in the alpha, this was omitted in the Steam version. Instead of levels like in a classic role-playing game, skills such as paragliding , climbing or swimming can be increased by so-called artifacts, the finding of which is the main objective of the game.

Races

In Cube World the player can choose between eight different races . These do not differ except for the appearance. The races available for selection are humans, elves , dwarves , orcs , goblins , lizard people , undead and frog people.

Game world

In the alpha of 2013, the game world was generated procedurally. After the player had given a name and a seed , he was placed in a world generated from the seed. This included various biomes such as forests , deserts and oceans as well as villages , castles , caves and other randomly placed structures. The player can move freely in the world, which was generated dynamically while exploring. So the game world was theoretically infinitely large.

In the Steam version of 2019, the fantasy world is divided into several dozen regions and is around 30 by 30 kilometers in size. The game world is no longer generated randomly and is also not infinite.

Missions

In Cube World the player can complete randomly generated missions, which currently only require defeating a particularly strong boss in so-called dungeons . This gives the player a large number of valuable items and platinum coins that can be used to upgrade their own equipment.

Multiplayer

Cube World provides free server software for playing with up to three other players. To do this, the IP address of the host must be known. Although there was hardly any interaction between players in the alpha version from 2013, features such as the automatic fair distribution of the loot were planned.

Were planned PvP games and respective rankings. Originally, MMO servers were also mentioned as a planned feature. However, unlike co-op , MMO features have been removed.

Development history

Cube World was developed by the German development studio Picroma, which consists of two people: Wolfram von Funck (nickname: Wollay ) and his wife Sarah ( Pixxie ).

Development began in 2011, according to a report by Rock, Paper, Shotgun in June 2011 , the game was said to have only been in development for a few weeks. The following year, PC Games reported that the Minecraft-themed RPG was making good progress.

Sales of the game in the alpha phase started in the summer of 2013. In the following months, however, it became quite quiet about the title, so that developer Wolfram von Funck apologized to the buyers via Twitter in October 2013 and assured the game work. Even then, there was criticism from users of the non-transparent development and the lack of updates for the Early Access title. Some buyers already feared that the development work had been stopped. In the following years, however, there were only a few minor updates.

It was not until September 2019, after four years of radio silence, that there was news from the developer from Saarlouis : He announced a Steam release of the game for the end of the month at short notice . The reason for the long waiting time was given by the developer that he was afraid after a DDoS attack on his website and that he did not dare to publish updates because he feared that they would not be good enough. On September 30, 2019, the game was finally released on the Steam distribution platform. Buyers of the alpha version received a Steam key.

Immediately after the release on Steam, developer Funck deleted his development blog.

The English-language trade magazine PC Gamer described the infinite fantasy game world as infinitely boring. The game lacks a tutorial or explanations and the crafting system is extremely simple.

According to a test video by GameStar , the game is huge but not finished in 2019 either. In addition, the role-playing elements are even less compared to the alpha version. According to the test report, the 2013 game was “okay” for an alpha, even if a lot was still missing at the time. After the 2019 release, however, the game had huge balancing problems. It is incomprehensible to the tester that functions such as the skill system with experience points and levels were removed again in the alpha. With its colorful game world that is inviting to explore, the game certainly has potential, but is simply unfinished.

The Polygon website stated that after eight years of development, the game couldn't possibly live up to expectations. Kotaku stated that Cube World was not worth the wait.
