Cuencamé or Cuencamé de Ceniceros is a small town with about 10,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with a total of about 35,000 inhabitants in the state of Durango in Mexico . The - partly in ruins - mission churches of the town and its surroundings are since 2010 as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro to UNESCO - World Heritage Site .
Location and climate
The small town of Cuencamé is located on the stream of the same name a good 140 km (driving distance) northeast of the capital of the state, Victoria de Durango , at an altitude of approx. 1580 m . The climate is mostly dry and warm ("steppe climate"); Rain (approx. 375 mm / year) falls predominantly in the summer half-year.

The surroundings of the place are rather dry like steppe. Mainly corn , beans, melons, etc. are grown .
history
Jesuits and monks of the Antonite Order founded a mission station here at the end of the 16th century, from which large parts of northern Mexico were evangelized. In the following centuries the place grew into a small town with a straight road network.
Attractions
- The newly plastered church of San Antonio de Padua was built in the 18th century on the site of an older previous building. Inside there are two altarpieces (retablos) from the 18th and 19th centuries.
- Surroundings
- The Nuestra Señora del Refugio church, built in the 18th century, is in the village of Cuatillo . The nave (nave) was originally covered wood; the corrugated iron roof that had been installed in the meantime was replaced by a flat wooden ceiling in 2016. The apse is spanned by an artesonado ceiling.
