Cultus Ferox (Latin for "wild lifestyle", "wild lifestyle") is a Berlin music group. It can be assigned to the so-called "bagpipe rock style" of medieval music, with the band playing both the acoustic version, dominated by market bag pipes and percussion , and the version of this music enriched with rock instruments ( medieval rock ).
Cultus Ferox's songs are partly instrumental, partly with vocals. The texts deal with topics from the medieval way of life, from legends and myths , from pagan religion and, more recently, increasingly with piracy and related topics.
Band history
The band was founded at the end of 2002. The name of the group comes from Latin and means "wild way of life". Some of their songs come from medieval minstrels and some are written by themselves.
The band members previously played with Corvus Corax (Brandanarius, Strahli, Donar), Tanzwut (Brandanarius), Fabula Aetatis (Briantanus, Asmon) and Wolgemut (Steffano).
After an album with Christmas dances, the first full-fledged album Wiederkehr was released in 2003 , on which music is played almost exclusively acoustically and instrumentally. The EPs Flamme des Meeres and Aufbruch followed . These EPs are already experimenting with rock influences.
In 2004 PanPeter officially joined the band as a guest musician in January 2005. At the end of 2005, Briantanus and Asmon left the band. They initially played as a guest musician with Cradem Aventure, but in 2006 decided to revive their old band Fabula Aetatis . Since 2006 Cultus Ferox has therefore been strengthened by Thomasius (or just “Masius”), who previously appeared as a guest musician, and Fedja von Hinnen (since 2007 under the name “El Böslinger”).
In March 2006 the album Unbeugsam and the DVD Strandgut were released with tour reports, videos, concert excerpts and band information. On the album “Unbeugsam” the band shows its rocking side more than ever. She uses electric guitars, electric bass and drums for most of the songs in addition to her acoustic instruments, and there is more singing than before.
Since then, most club concerts have been played with this rock concept, while concerts in medieval markets continue to be played puristically with purely acoustic instruments. In their rock shows, Cultus Ferox distinguish themselves from similar bands such as In Extremo , Saltatio Mortis , Schelmish or Tanzwut through a pirate or seafarer image .
The DVD / CD rum tour shows the band at one of their rock shows. The guitarists are Burny C and Rudi Rudell. Marauder Rudolph uses the electric bass.
