Curd Lessig

Curd Lessig (born November 22, 1924 in Stuttgart ; † May 23, 2019 ) was a painter , graphic artist and designer of church windows living in Würzburg .

life and work

Curd Lessig studied painting from 1939 to 1940 under Heiner Dikreiter . From 1940 to 1942 an apprenticeship as a church painter followed at the Menna company in Würzburg, and he also attended evening courses with Dikreiter. In 1942 he was drafted into the war, in August 1944 he was taken prisoner by the United States, from which he was released in 1946.

In 1947 Lessig was a founding member of the professional association of visual artists (BBK) Upper and Lower Franconia in Bamberg. From 1948 to 1959 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Walther Teutsch (1883–1964). He worked as a church painter and restorer for the Menna company in many Franconian, Hessian and Westphalian churches.

In March 1957 Lessig set up his own studio and dealt with glass window design, painting, graphics and landscape gouache . In 1962 he moved into his own house with a studio. He received public contracts and won competitions with mosaics, wall paintings and frescoes, but above all with glass windows. His catalog raisonné contains over 400 examples, from the Bundeswehr barracks to the funeral hall, from schools to churches. In the field of printmaking he used the techniques of linocut , etching , lithography and serigraphy ; in addition there were ink and pen drawings as well as drawings with colored and pencil.

Study trips led Lessig to Europe, Egypt, Mexico, India, Burma, Thailand, China and Japan.
